    We need some trumpets; let's scare the hell out of them; 4th of July; no fear, today; buy a veteran a beer; happy 4th; if it were easy, we wouldn't need you; you are the best, and we appreciate you very much;

    Jacko: "No matter what you say about Michael Jackson, there is little disputing the $500 million or so he left us in debt"

    "Us?" How do you figure "we" are on the hook for his debt?

    Happy 4th.

    Speaking of freedom to steal... radio news headline this morning characterized Obama's weekly address as "pushing his nationalized healthcare plan." I think this was just regular local news, and I did not hear the actual address (save for the snippet where he bashes his critics as saying "they say we move too fast.." -- no!, ya think?), but that's the first time I've heard the news use the actual "N" word like that, as they are usually far more obfuscatory.

    So, although this piece (and the icy grim words of the POTUS himself) brought a chill to my spinal column, the reflection that the news media was getting more honest (perhaps the word is "confident?") also afforded me a brief ray of hope.

    We've got some work to do here, folks.

    Good post, Howard. I think that using Twitter and reading your blog are helping me realize (again) that some posts can say a lot in just a few short paragraphs.

    Key point: "To continue our amazing freedoms, we need to ask better questions and demand some of our basic rights back. Most important we better start picking up after ourselves."

    Couldn't agree more w/ this sentiment. We need to exercise our basic rights or we'll risk losing them. This country was founded by men who believed/understood that we are endowed with natural rights & govt. is set up to PROTECT us from intrusion against our liberties.

    Too many people today believe that rights are something invented by government and granted to us. That framework is a stepping stone to slavery.

    Catching up on the July 4 reading I missed. This is a great recap of the year to date and the articles by Taibbi and Lewis are classics.
